300 Village Lane, Scotts Valley
From Blank Canvas to Living Ecosystem
When the owners moved in, they had a stunning modern home — and a yard of bare dirt and construction debris. No shade, no privacy, no connection between indoors and out. The landscape was an afterthought.
Walk through the property — before
Without proper drainage, grading, and ground cover, bare soil erodes. Water pools against foundations. What starts as an empty yard becomes an active problem.
Every landscape begins with listening — to the slope of the land, the path of the sun, the way water moves through the site. At Polo Ranch, we designed a system of interconnected outdoor rooms: a productive food forest, stone pathways threading through native plantings, an arbor-covered walkway creating a transition from the modern architecture to the wild garden beyond.
The design balances beauty with function — rainwater is captured and directed, every plant serves a purpose, and the hardscape creates structure that will look better with age.
Design plan — native plants, edible trees, and outdoor living zones extending from the California room.
Building a landscape like this is physical, precise work. Every stone is placed by hand. Irrigation lines are mapped to plant water needs. Soil is amended and restored before a single plant goes in. The build phase at Polo Ranch took several months of intensive, hands-on craft.
Laying stone pathways by hand.
Two years later, the Polo Ranch landscape has matured into a thriving ecosystem. Passionfruit drapes over the arbor. Native plants attract pollinators. Stone pathways wind through dense, productive plantings. The bare lot is unrecognizable.
